Just south of Banff and a little over one hour west of Calgary, Canmore is synonymous with jaw-dropping Rocky Mountain scenery, some of the planet's best hiking and biking, and easy access to the world-famous national park—but it’s also a mecca for golf.
Surrounded by rugged peaks and glacier-fed rivers, the mountain town is home to some of the most scenic golf courses in Canada. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or just out for a casual round here and there, Canmore offers unforgettable fairways.
And when it’s time to relax off the greens, Grande Rockies Resort is the perfect basecamp. Located a short drive, bike ride, or even walk from downtown, our condo-style suites and traditional hotel rooms give you all the comforts of home and enough space for everyone in your group to truly unwind.
Here’s your guide to golfing in Canmore, including the best time to play and the top courses to check out.
When is the Best Time to Golf in Canmore?
Golf season in Canmore is short but sweet, much like summer itself. Most courses open in May and close by mid-October, with peak conditions from late June through early September. Summer brings warm, sunny days and cool mornings, ideal for early tee times and long afternoons on the course. Longer daylight hours mean you can book later rounds without racing sunset, and while summer is the 'rainy season,' heavy storms are rare in town. Expect mostly short showers, particularly in the morning or late afternoon.
Silvertip Resort
Designed by renowned architect Les Furber, this 7,173-yard course is set on the sunny side of the Bow Valley, offering panoramic views from nearly every hole. But don’t let the scenery distract you; Silvertip is notoriously challenging, known for its dramatic elevation changes, deep bunkers, and fast greens. The course weaves through steep hillsides and natural mountain terrain, so expect uneven lies, sidehill stances, and even the occasional wildlife sighting. Accuracy is key here, especially on the back nine, where the layout gets tighter and more technical. After your round, grab a bite to eat at Stoney's Grill or Rustica. If you time it right, you can catch happy hour at Stoney's from 2–6:00 pm daily.
Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club
Stewart Creek offers a different kind of alpine golf—still scenic, but a bit more forgiving. Gary Browning designed the course, blending wide fairways and generous landing zones with well-placed hazards and thoughtful greens (and, of course, the best spots with a view). It’s ideal for mid-handicap players or groups with varying skill levels. What sets Stewart Creek apart is its polished feel. The clubhouse experience is top-notch, with a full-service restaurant and practice facilities, and every hole is beautifully manicured. The front nine features sweeping mountain views, while the back nine has more forested holes and tighter approaches.
Canmore Golf & Curling Club
For a more relaxed experience, head to Canmore Golf & Curling Club. This semi-private course sits right along the Bow River, offering postcard-worthy views of Ha Ling Peak and the Three Sisters, some of the most iconic natural Canmore attractions. It’s also one of the flattest courses in town, lending a more walkable and beginner-friendly experience. Originally established in 1926, "the club" has a long history in the area and a loyal following within the community. The course plays to just over 6,300 yards from the back tees, with tree-lined fairways and several water features to keep things interesting. Conditions are consistently excellent, and as a nice perk, it's one of the best values in town for a round of mountain golf. Although you won’t find upscale amenities like valet service, you will find a well-run pro shop and an exceptionally welcoming, casual atmosphere.
Can I Play Golf Without Being a Member?
Yes, fortunately, you don’t need a membership to enjoy golfing in Canmore. All three courses we featured here are either public or semi-private, open to everyone. At Stewart Creek, however, keep in mind that the course is reserved for members only on Saturdays and Sundays until 10:30 am.
